IMPORTANT SAFE ARRIVALS REMINDER

We would like to remind families to report any student absences, especially during the first week of school. We recognize some families may be on extended vacation, transfer schools or move out of the board area and ask that you contact the school to inform office staff during the last week of August or on the first day of school.

As per Board Policy and Procedures #665.0, Safe Arrivals and Departures – Elementary and Secondary Students, if your child’s absence is still not verified even after exhausting different steps to connect with the family, York Regional Police will be contacted and may be dispatched to your residence.

We remind parent(s)/guardian(s) to update the school with all emergency contact information when changes are made.
Thank you for your cooperation in reporting student absences.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PROTOCOLS

Please ensure you are familiar with our Board’s Health and Safety policies to promote the prevention of contracting and spreading infections.

The policies and procedures were outlined in our September Back to School email (found on our website).

DISMISSAL ON THE FIRST DAY

Please ensure your child knows how s/he will go home at the end of the day (parent pick up or bus).  If your child is taking the bus, please ensure s/he knows the bus number and route. More information about bus routes and times can be found at www.schoolbuscity.com.

You can print a copy of the elementary calendar from:

DROP OFF AND PICK UP SAFETY

Please be mindful that our bus loop is for buses only and that it is also closed to pedestrian traffic.  If you are walking your children to school, please use designated walking paths to ensure the safety of you and your children.

MEDICAL INFORMATION

If your child is diagnosed with Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Diabetes, or Seizure, please visit  https://www2.yrdsb.ca/schools-programs/school-registration  and scroll down to “Step 3” to download and complete the applicable form.

Don’t forget to send in epi-pens and complete medical forms at the office as needed.  Blank forms can be picked up from the office or printed from our website.

LUNCHTIME PERMISSION TO LEAVE SCHOOL FOR GRADES 7 & 8

This opportunity is available only to students in Grades 7 and 8.

Students must remain at school during the lunch period unless they have been granted parental permission to leave the school grounds. Permission may be provided through the Start-Up Forms or by email sent to the school.

Please note that when you provide permission for your child to leave school property during lunch, you are assuming responsibility for your child while they are off school grounds. As outlined in our newsletters and welcome/start-up package, the school is not responsible for students who leave school property (with parental permission) during the lunch period.

Students who have permission to leave must:

  • Eat their lunch before returning to school.
  • Sign in at the office upon their return.
  • Return to school after 1:00 p.m. and before 1:10 p.m.

If you would like to allow your child to go out for lunch on a particular day, please email thornhill.ps@yrdsb.ca no later than 11:00 a.m. that day. Students will not be permitted to call home for lunch permission, except in the case of an emergency, so please ensure you make these arrangements with your child in advance.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us ensure student safety and accountability during the lunch period.

LUNCH REMINDERS FOR WHOLE SCHOOL

As we settle into the school year, we would like to send a friendly reminder regarding student lunches.

Our lunch period runs from 12:10 p.m. to 12:30 p.m., and students should have their lunches available when the lunch period begins. To help ensure a smooth lunch routine for all students, we ask that lunch drop-offs be made before 12:10 p.m. whenever possible.

Late lunch deliveries may leave students waiting longer than expected to eat. While we understand that occasional emergencies happen, food delivery services (e.g., Uber Eats, DoorDash, SkipTheDishes) should be reserved for exceptional circumstances only. These interruptions can make it more difficult for staff to respond promptly to student needs, visitor inquiries, attendance matters, and other time-sensitive safety and operational responsibilities. Your cooperation helps us maintain a safe and well-organized environment for all students.

We appreciate your support in helping students be prepared for lunch each day and in minimizing interruptions. Thank you for your cooperation and partnership.
